George Bush Intercontinental sits about 23 miles north of downtown Houston. On a map that is a short drive. In practice it is one of three different drives depending on the hour, and the difference between them is the thing most visitors do not plan for.
How long IAH to downtown actually takes
These are our own running times, not an app's estimate. Off-peak, airport curb to a downtown hotel door is about 30 minutes. In morning rush, roughly 7 to 10, and afternoon rush, 4 to 7, it is 40 to 45 minutes.
Which road we take, and why our first choice is the toll road
There are three ways in: the Hardy Toll Road, Interstate 45, and US-59/I-69 via the Eastex Freeway. The map will often tell you 45 or 59 is a minute or two faster. Our default is the Hardy Toll Road, and we use it unless there is a specific reason not to. It runs straight from the airport to the north edge of downtown with almost no merging traffic, it does not back up the way 45 does at the 610 interchange, and it does not carry the truck volume 59 does. The toll is included in your fare. The point is not the minutes saved on a good day. It is that the Hardy's bad day is still predictable, and a predictable drive is what lets us promise a pickup time to the next client.
Where your driver is waiting
Domestic arrivals come into Terminals A and C. Your driver is inside, at baggage claim, with a name board – at Terminal C that is by door C-103, and if you have checked bags the driver moves to your carousel. International arrivals clear through Terminal E, where chauffeurs are not allowed into the baggage hall, so your driver meets you curbside in the limo area at Zone 4 and times the pull-in to your walk-out. The full terminal-by-terminal version is in our guide to where your driver meets you at IAH.
Which downtown hotels and buildings we drop at
Most downtown drop-offs are the hotel cluster around the George R. Brown and Discovery Green – the Marriott Marquis, the Hilton Americas, the Four Seasons – and the office towers along Louisiana, Smith and Main. Tell us the building when you book and the driver takes the right exit the first time; downtown is a one-way grid and a wrong turn costs a full loop.
IAH or Hobby for downtown?
From downtown the two airports are close to even: Hobby is 25 minutes off-peak, IAH 30. Hobby wins in afternoon rush by ten to fifteen minutes because it avoids the north-side freeways. If your airline flies both, choose on fare and schedule, not the drive. We wrote a full comparison of IAH and Hobby and a drive-time table for every area we serve.
Questions we get about IAH to downtown
How much does a car service from IAH to downtown cost?
We quote by route, not by meter, and confirm the price when you book, so the fare does not change if traffic does. Request a quote and you will have a number in minutes.
Is the Hardy Toll Road faster than 45?
Usually by a few minutes, but the reason we use it is consistency, not speed. See above.
How early should I book?
Three hours' notice is our standard minimum; for an early-morning arrival or a holiday week, the day before.
Does the driver wait if my flight is late?
Yes. We track the flight, the pickup moves with it, and there is up to 60 minutes of complimentary wait after landing.
Can you take me to the Galleria or the Medical Center instead?
Yes – same booking, different drop. Galleria is about 30 minutes off-peak; the Medical Center is 35 to 40.
